Leaft Spearheads Innovation in Leaf Protein Concentrate Production, Building a New Industry in New Zealand

Christchurch, New Zealand (4 September 2019) – Leaft Foods Ltd today announced it has been successful in its application for a Research and Development Project Grant from Callaghan Innovation. The grant will contribute towards finalization of the company’s 2019 R&D plan, building on the exciting work undertaken so far and enabling the team to push the boundaries in its processes and systems.

General Manager of Leaft Foods, Mr Ross Milne, was excited to announce the news, “we’re delighted to be a new recipient of the R&D project grant. This partnership with Callaghan Innovation will significantly enhance New Zealand’s capability in leading new plant protein technology and functionalities with high consumer appeal”.

The grant recognizes the company’s long-term aim of producing leaf protein concentrate ingredients for a range of foods. These proteins are expected to have high nutritional value, and a lighter environmental footprint than either animal or grain-based sources of protein.

Founder and Directors John and Maury Leyland Penno were enthusiastic about the R&D progress, Dr Penno said “Callaghan Innovation has a solid track record of supporting innovative companies to develop their business into a stable and substantial R&D performer. We’re looking forward to this next phase with the ability to build the team and resources”.
